The series began with serial # X1001 and ran through serial # X99999, which was produced in 1953. Your gun does appear to have been manufactured in 1948. The serial number is 39xxx with a "S" above it. I read online that S# 1-228,000 were between 1903-1939.
Serial number is: 68S above 78768. I have another Sweet Sixteen with serial number: S above 64683. People here have been kind enough to tell me that one was made in 1957. From my research, it would appear that a serial # of 78768 is also from 1957. Browning's website only lists M for standard and G for light weight.
