The sacrifice you make working in M&A is that your wlb sucks, your comp isn't that insane until 5+ years in but you have a high ceiling compared to other fields where few make $1m+ a year.

The key piece seems to be that SVB had a ton of securities (long-dated treasuries and MBS) marked as held-to-maturity, which meant they didn't have to mark to market. These things all got wrecked because interest rates have gone up - the FV adjustments (you can find them in the 10-K, etc.) exceeded SVB's equity.

Eh I think you’re alone here with that pet peeve. I personally like the term because jobs like FP&A, insurance underwriting, wealth management, etc. are very different from IB, HF, S&T, AM, or PE. I know jackshit about the finance world outside of “high finance”, which is why I find the term useful to differentiate what we’re talking about.
