Both of us ran each.The filter setup is way nicer on the 462, personally even in stock form I feel the 462 has a higher RPM powerband so it seems more appealing for limbing. It just seems to feel better in my hands than the 500i. Overall the performance gained in the 500 in peak power/torque is hard to justify for $200 more.

The 462 is the successor to the 461 (a safe lineage), whereas the 500i is a new breed of animal. Myself, I would wait a couple of years for any bugs to be found and fixed in the 500i. To expensive for me to pay to be a product tester for Stihl.

Jul 20, 2018 · The 462 seems like it’s going to be the lightest in its class for sure. I think Husqvarna fattened up the 562XP in the last few years . Check Husqvarna.com it specs the 562XP at 6.1kg (13.448 lbs) Stihl MS462 on the Stihl site is spec at 6 kg (13.228 lbs) Those specs have been out for a few years now. Remember - the 462 isn’t a 46, it’s a 44. Really should have been called the 442. Naming goof aside, I love my 462R, and would pick it over any of the true 46 saws listed. 500i replaces ms461. For some stupid reason, the marketing idiots at Stihl decided the 46 badge had more name recognition, so they killed the 44 and did a switcharoo.When you open the hole in the muffler make sure you donot open the hole going outwards towards the bar and chain cause you will end up melting you chain brake handle and I have both done , 462 and 500. That sounds like a much less expensive option. A bark box would be $120 cdn shipped from BC.I got a 462 first, enjoyed it once broke in. Eventually got a 500i...like it so much I sold the 462. 500i seems quite a bit more powerful. If you can afford the 500i, that's what I would go for. It's better, IMO. ... Haven't tried the 500i though so can't give a direct comparison. At the moment it has an 18" bar on it with a big sprocket for supercharged ringing up. The only slight niggle I have with the 462 is that it is difficult to tension the chain fully when the saw is hot. I don't know if this is a design flaw or just me being a Norbert.
