You are correct. shelling does fixed damage and is not effected by elemental. Gunlance is actually quite capable of doing some rapid hit combos with poke > shoot > poke poke > shoot repeating, but yes, if you're mainly shelling, elemental/status will have little effect on your gameplay. #2. Shell, quick reload, slam, burst, sweep, quick reload. Long kinda does it all, it actually isn’t super weak for the other shelling types, but it is still weaker than wide at single shells, and weaker than normal at bursts. Using a single shell can be a good idea leading into a charged shell. I use a para GL for long shelling.
