Shades depend on the model. CQ and other large lamps like the 118 all look right with a 306 "Rayo" shade. They can be found for reasonable prices. Small lamps use a shade protector. The lower the tank level, the more difficult it might be to light the lantern due to the lower static level in the in the fuel pickup tube. less initial fuel will be supplied to the generator resulting in maybe some flame, but then it dies. Try it again with a full tank if the previous start did not have a full tank.

The 285 is the smaller of the two. The 295 will generally have "Powerhouse" on the decal. Both have a black vent with a silver fount. If I remember correctly, the model number is on the collar in small numbers like "285-700".Once its depressurized, cradle the lantern in your arm horizontally like a baby, pump it 20-25 times, and yeah, then try to work the insert loose, with the fuel filler straight up. Be ready for any gas to possibly spray out, but I havent had that happen with any lantern less than half full.

An old advertisement shows someone spraying a lantern with a garden hose. I don't recommend it but it shows they are safe for use in rain. If it's vintage glass I'd use a cheap new 200a globe instead. Old glass is always getting harder to find.
