Took the bluff trail to the wildcat canyon falls overlook then the river trail to the base of the falls. Finished off with the loop to Starved Rock. lots of boardwalks and stairs, otherwise the trail is mostly sandy. Falls were dry but there are lots of hiking options. Could easily spend several hours exploring the park. Highly recommend.

We decided to stop at Matthiessen State Park on our way home from southern Illinois. It is located a few miles south of the more “famous” Starved Rock. The park was named after Frederick Matthiessen who originally owned 176 acres. Donated by his heirs after his death in 1918, it has grown to 1938 acres.
