Let me see if I can find it. A House is considered corrupted based on its "Corruption rating," which calculates all tiles in a 45-block "radius" around the house; a house's Corruption rating must be 250 or less. This is about half the blocks in the radius. Pulled from the wiki.

Bear in mind that the corrupt thorny vines found on the surface may also spread the corruption and grass is affected by corruption over a range of 5 tiles. In pre-hardmode this is fine since a single block can interrupt the spread. in this case since it is wider than 3 tiles the corruption can't reach the other side of the house in hardmode. That "invalid" message is such an useless one. it's really not helpful... the game should say something else, like "this housing it too close to crimson/corruption" or something in these cases, even if it doesn't says it's "corrupted".

The npcs dont want corruption in a 50 block radius. If you keep that up yes they can live there. Theres a catch tho. Npcs have preffered biomes sp putting them all in the sky wouldnt be that smart.
