Age of S & W revolvers. Hello. I am new to the forum and love Smith and Wesson guns. I recently purchased two revolvers and need some help finding the age of them. One is a model 36, serial number 5J5599. It is a blued gun 38 cal. The other one is a 357 magnum in stainless steel model 66.In one known example a gun with serial S136431 was not shipped until June of 1958. It's possible that a large block of serial numbers that appear to be from 1954-55 were not actually used until 1957-58. It at least one case a gun has a 5-screw serial and was built as a 4-screw gun. I am curious about the serial number which is either TVBIxxx or TVB1xxx. It clearly looks like a capital "I" and not a "1" and is in the fourth position. On all my other S&W 3rd gens, ones (1) are clearly a number 1 with the serif at the top and no "foot" at the bottom.

They weren't made at an even x-number per year, so extrapolating your serial in that range isn't going to be exact.
