Start by making sure you have Animal Pen in your feats and simply grab a couple Hyena Cubs around the general area of noob river near cliff sides and hyena spawns.Thralls can get to crazy high hp, and you could slap on a sword of crom and you have a thrall that can just fight bosses for you. As for pets, one of the best balances of damage to health is a sand reaper queen, though not the easiest pet to get.
