I have seen far too many folks running 285/70/17 in both tires with no lift that I'm truly dumbfounded why so many people like to claim that you need a lift, trimming, and even a cab mount chop. To me that's total overkill.

I use to have General X3 Mudders 265-70-17 in an E load. Wow... the car was so stiff and heavy. I now have 285-70-17 ATKO 2 in a C load range and it was significantly lighter as well. May 8, 2016 · You really need to lift the well over and away from the tire (at least for 285’s). There are some threads that talk about 285s fitting no problem, or 285’s fitting with fender mods, but later comments admit that with heavy breaking at lock (wheel turned all the way) or off road adventures that rubbing is an issue.

After 8 years and 112k miles, I finally decided to do something to it: 3” toytec/bilstein lift, 1.25” wheel spacers, and 285/70r17 Ridge Grapplers. We put the 17x8 atx crawl wheels on years ago, and have been running 265/70r17 Terra Grapplers basically since we bought it.

I find this strange since 285/70s are made in 16, 17, 18, and 19.5 sizes. Truthfully, a hypothetical 265/75 R17 tire would have virtually the same diameter as a 285/70 R17, but would fit better with less potential issues with rubbing. The fact that 265/75 R17 doesn't exist is what allows you to just refer to tire size as 265 or 285.Bought my 2020 4Runner from the lot with 285 75 17 Nitto Ridge Grabblers ... It will rub two areas depending on your caster. It will rub on back of the lower part of your bumper and the mud flaps near body mount. Both areas will requiring cutting, pushing and removing.
